Top 20 Most Anticipated Films of 2016

2015 has winded down and a new year is upon us.  12 months of new movies to look forward to and what a year 2016 is looking to be. I couldn’t wait for 2015 (with “Star Wars” and “Avengers” and “Jurassic World” all coming out in the same year) but when making my list for the upcoming year I found it to be far more difficult to make.  To both figure out what to include and then what order to place them in proved to be a far more difficult task then last year.  I haven’t been quite sure on my list and it’s bound to change (especially once the fall movies become more well known and nail a release date down). For instance there was still other movies that didn’t make my list like “Legend of Tarzan”, “Secret Life of Pets”, “Hacksaw Ridge” and “The Magnificent Seven” (among many others).  For now though, this list will have to do.

To lay down some ground rules movies like “The Revenant” do not count for this list.  While their wide release may be in January, they are still 2015 movies.  To put it more simply if the movie is eligible for an Oscar, it is not eligible for this list.  Okay without further ado let’s start the listing.

Why Am I Excited-

This was not a film I was looking forward too at all when it was first announced.  Disney has had a recent trend of reimaging their classic fairy tale animated films to a very hit and miss success.  I really enjoy the original 1967 animated classic but it never struck me as a movie I’d like to see live action.  I was honestly looking forward to seeing the Andy Serkis directed version coming out in 2017, “Jungle Book: Origins”.  Then the huge amounts of buzz coming out of the D23 convention hit my ears.  Shortly after that the outstanding first trailer came out.  Now the more I see of it the more excited I become. With “Cinderella”  coming out earlier this year in 2015 to surprising success, I have confidence that Disney has find their stride with the live action films department.  The visual effects looks amazing, the cast is incredible and it’s being helmed by “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau.  So, now I’m completely sold on this film.

9- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Why I am Excited-

I grew up both reading and watching the “Harry Potter” series.  When the credits for “Deathly Hallows Part II” started rolling I thought I had seen the end of the world that J.K Rowling created.  Then the announcement came out that there was going to be new movies, and I instantly became skeptical.  Until they revealed J.K Rowling will be writing the scripts (for this new trilogy) and creating the story that would be a prequel but not a story centered around the back story of Harry Potter or his parents.  Instead this will be a separate story that takes place in the Wizarding World.  This is exciting because of the rich potential to expand on the mythos and its own world.  Plus director David Yates is back at the helm (he directed movies 5-8 of the Harry Potter series and upcoming “Legend of Tarzan”).  Adding the current defending best actor winner in Eddie Redmayne can’t hurt either.

8- Deadpool

Why I am Excited-

This is a movie most comic book fans have been dreaming of for years.  After the disappointment of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and the horrible incarnation of Deadpool featured in that film, fans (like myself) have been clamoring for something more respectable (and just something all around better). After years of waiting, whispers and campaigning the “Deadpool” feature is a go with Ryan Reynolds returning to play the role he was born to play while also securing the R rating that the character deserves).  I do worry that this film will be a bit style over substance (granted it’s Deadpool so it’s suppose to be more style than substance).  The marketing so far for this movie is beyond terrific and at very least captures the character.  So, if the movie sucks at least we had a pretty awesome marketing campaign before hand to enjoy.

7- Warcraft

Why I am Excited-

This maybe higher on the list then others may place it but it’s here for a variety of reasons.  First off, all video game movies suck.  There has never been a good one (plain and simple).  I want there to be great video game movies because there is so much rich potential, in many video games, for some great feature film adaptations.  Warcraft wasn’t my first choice for this but the more I see from it and the more I think about it Warcraft is a perfect choice to adapt a video game from.  The world of the game is vast and rich with a deep mythology. However it leaves enough room for the filmmakers to be creative without alienating hardcore fans.  I do believe this could be the first great video game movie.  You have Duncan Jones as a director (from “Moon” and “Source Code” fame), good cast, and some grand breaking visual effects.  I also love the genre of fantasy so “Warcraft” could fill that void “The Hobbit” trilogy left me after its conclusion.  I may have my concerns about the feature (it is a video game movie after all) but if this ends up becoming another poor video game feature, I suppose we’ll look to “Assassins Creed” (coming out in December) to break that trend.

6-X-Men: Apocalypse

Why I am Excited-

Fox Studios may be bad at making “Fantastic Four” movies but they have shown how great they are at the “X-Men” franchise.  They had their share of blunders (“X-Men: The Last Stand” and “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) but they rode the ship back onto the right course and now we have both “Deadpool” and “X-Men: Apocalypse” to look forward too.   Most of the “First Class” cast returns for Bryan Singer’s follow up to the outstanding “X-Men: Days of Future Past”.  This is also the first appearance of perhaps one of the greatest villains in comic book history, Apocalypse, being played by the incredible talent of Oscar Isaac.  He may look a bit different then the comics but to be complete honest I’m warming up to the look of the character.  Besides that, the amount of talent assembled into this feature is staggering (Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, among so many others).  The trailer was incredible and there really isn’t much else I can say about this then I already have said.  I have a feeling we’ll have another great X-Men movie on our hands.

5-Finding Dory

Why I am Excited-

Anyone who has followed this blog for any amount of time knows how much I love Pixar.  To me there is an argument to be made that Pixar is not the best animated studio in North American but also the best film studio (live action or not).  Naturally any Pixar movie that gets a release I’m instantly excited for.  “Finding Nemo” is more than likely my favorite Pixar movie (but to honest it’s hard to pick a favorite) but it’s still not one I would immediately pick to do a sequel for.  Making Dory the main character does worry me a bit.  But at the end of the day, it’s Pixar and I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.  “Inside Out”  is still one of my favorite movies of 2015 (and deserves an Oscar nomination for Best Picture) and the little teaser for this movie was charming.  I’m really excited for another Pixar feature.

4- Captain America: Civil War

Why I am Excited-

It’s pretty clear that I am a comic book fan so it’s hard not to get excited for a big screen adaptation of Mark Millar’s controversial but excellent graphic novel “Civil War”.  While this won’t be a shot for shot adaptation of the novel (it more serves more as inspiration) it’s great ground work to craft your film around.  I was not all that thrilled with 2015’s Marvel films but that doesn’t mean I don’t think marvel isn’t capable of creating some great content.  Directed by the Russo brother who brought us Marvel’s best film, “Captain America: The Winter Solider” , the movie looks focused and emotionally charged.  This is sure to be a great year for comic book movies and I’m sure Marvel will help lead the charge with “Civil War”.

3- Suicide Squad

suicide-squad-2016-originalRelease Date- August 3rd, 2016

Why I am Excited-

Another comic book film to hit my top ten list.  This one is DC Comic’s second feature to be released in 2016 and it’s a bit of a risk.   Suicide Squad is a darker and lesser known property in the DC universe made up entirely of villains.  It’ll be interesting to see how audiences respond to such a film.  For me I love seeing DC take a risk with this type of material and introducing us to a bunch of character we haven’t yet seen on the big screen (including fan favorite Harley Quinn playing Margot Robbie).  Warner Brothers assembled an incredible cast of actors to play their respective characters that includes such names as Will Smith, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, and the aforementioned Margot Robbie .  Director David Ayer (of “End of Watch” and Fury”) is behind the cameras plus we’re getting to see a new incarnation of the Joker on screen played by the Academy Award winner acting Jared Leto.  There is so much to look forward to with this film.

2- Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice

Batman-V-Superman-Batman-teaser-posterRelease Date- March 25

Why I am Excited-

A while ago this may have been my number 1 pick after perhaps one of the best trailers I have ever seen with the footage that premiered at comic con.  Some days it feels like my number one pick still.  Batman is without a doubt my favorite comic book character and am beyond excited to see Ben Affleck play him.  Superman is also amongst my favorites and I was among the people who really enjoyed “Man of Steel”, and am a fan of director Zack Snyder (especially his film “Watchmen”).  I’ve wanted to see these two characters on the big screen together for a very long time (perhaps my entire life).  I am worried of Warner Bros over stuffing this feature and the last trailer didn’t do much for me, but that doesn’t change the fact that I am incredibly excited for this film.  DC has to knock this out of the park if they want to a have a long and sustainable franchise.

1- Star Wars Anthology: Rouge One (aka: Rouge One: A Star Wars Story)

Star-Wars-Rogue-One-02Release Date- December 14th

Why I am Excited-

It’s “Star Wars”…how can I not be excited?  Disney and Lucasfilm proved to the world they were more then up to the task of carrying on the Star Wars legacy with “The Force Awakens” and this feature will mark the first of their “Spin Off” films that take place outside of the ongoing episodic saga (one could argue the first official spin off film was “The Clone Wars”).  Taking place just before “A New Hope” this film shows how the rebels got the plans to the Death Star in the first place.  Bringing on (2014) “Godzilla” director Gareth Edwards (a film I really loved) to helm this project, gathering together a cast of great actors, and a completely different tone then we’re use to seeing, this proves to be a very intriguing film.  Disney has made it very clear this will be a much darker, and grounded entry than anything else we’ve previously seen.  This is going to be a much more war like and grittier take on the “Star Wars” universe (seems to be in the vein of the recent Star Wars novel “Star Wars Battlefront: Twilight Company”).  I love “Star Wars” and this is a great way to keep us fans preoccupied until the release of “Star Wars Episode VII”.

So, that’s my list what’s yours?  Did I leave any films out that you’d like to see?  Leave your thoughts and comments in the comment section below.  2016 looks to be a great year in the making.
