It’s pretty amazing that the sheer amount of “Star Wars” news and speculation surrounding “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has not spoiled all the mystery of what is to come in the film. From Star Wars Celebration, Comic Con, and the D23 conference coming up, Disney and Lucasfilm has manage to run the gambit of revealing enough to keep fans happy but not nearly enough for us to feel like we’ve seen the movie. There is still many questions worth asking. Now Entertainment Weekly has released a big double sized issue with new pictures from the upcoming “Star Wars” film along with an interview with director J.J. Abrams. Where once again he feeds us new info but is vague enough to have plenty of room of speculation. So let’s dive in.
The first thing J.J. Abrams confirms is we won’t be seeing a new trailer at Disney’s D23 Convention this August. Abrams tells EW, ” “It is true, we are showing no footage, behind the scenes or otherwise… “In the fall, there’ll be a trailer.” Many have speculated that we might see one on Force Friday, where a bunch of new “Star Wars” merchandise will be unveiled. Still that feels a bit too early with Force Friday’s date being September 4th. Perhaps they will make a surprise appearance at New York Comic Con this October?
The juiciest part of this article(s) is the new information J.J. Abrams revealed around the film’s mysterious new mask wielding antagonist, Kylo Ren. Not much has been known about him and fans have speculated to death surrounding his character. Abrams and EW had this to say,
We came to learn that he was allied with The First Order, a remnant of the Empire that remains a fearsome threat to the galaxy and its denizens. Above, he is seen flanked by their stormtroopers, striding with intense purpose through the smoldering ruins of a once peaceful village on Jakku.
What does he want? That much remains unclear, although he seems to be a Vader obsessive, with an appearance influenced by that dark lord of the Sith who met his demise long before Ren’s birth. “The movie explains the origins of the mask and where it’s from, but the design was meant to be a nod to the Vader mask,” Abrams tells EW. “[Ren] is well aware of what’s come before, and that’s very much a part of the story of the film.”
He is a character who came to the name Kylo Ren when he joined a group called the Knights of Ren,” Abrams says. But that’s as far as the writer-director will go. What are the Knights of Ren?
The connection to Vader is very eye opening. We see a shot of Vader’s burned helmet in the most recent trailer and perhaps Ren is a Sith Relic hunter (like many have theorized). Abrams says “Ren is well aware of what’s come before.” Perhaps the mask is also a nod towards Darth Revan from “The Old Republic“. “What’s come before” could refer to Vader or it could refer to the Sith’s past linage. The similarities between Kylo Ren and Darth Revan’s are almost uncanny. Plus what is the Knights of Ren? What is Kylo Ren’s real name (a Solo or a Skywalker perhaps)? Could they be an army of Sith? Is this the Force awakening? So many questions! It excites me though!
The new pictures all look fantastic. Some new shots confirm C3P0 has a red arm (for reasons unknown), plus some new looks at things we’ve already seen like Daisy Ridley and John Boyega. Adam Driver as Kylo Ren looks menacing in his screenshot. I hope Abrams and co learn from the prequels and don’t kill off a good villain too soon (EX. Darth Maul, which was fixed in “The Clone Wars”).
Abrams said in another article, “I’m still editing and we’re working on refining the cut, but it’s incredibly fun to see the movie come together,” Abrams said. “You realize certain things that you don’t need, certain things you can pull out.”
“Star Wars Episode VII- The Force Awakens” comes out December 16th. Check out the rest of the new pictures below.
