Tim Burton has Johnny Depp and Martin Scorsese has Leonardo DiCaprio. DiCaprio has been working with the legendary filmmaker since the Academy Award nominated film “Gangs of New York“. Most recently the actor and director pairing could be seen in 2013’s controversial but near masterpiece “The Wolf of Wall Street”. Now the pair are back at it again.
The two are teaming up for “The Devil in White City“. An adaptation of the book Erik Larson’s book “The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America“. Leonardo DiCaprio has been in development of this project since reportedly 2010. The plot broken down by Deadline reads like this,
DiCaprio will play one of the most prolific serial killers in Chicago history, the 19th century equivalent of Hannibal Lecter. DiCaprio will play Dr. HH Holmes, a cunning serial killer believed to have murdered anywhere from 27 to 200 people at a time when the city of Chicago was enthralled with hosting the World’s Fair of 1893. Holmes constructed The World’s Fair Hotel, an inn more lethal than the Bates Motel, especially for young single women. The sociopath used charm and guile to lure guests into what became known as a “murder castle,” a haunt that had a gas chamber, crematorium and a dissecting table where Holmes would murder his victims and strip their skeletons to sell for medical and scientific study.
This is a fascinating story and to have an actor like DiCaprio play the famed serial killer is enough to get me excited. Typically DiCaprio plays the hero or the anti-hero. Holmes will certainly be anything but that. This is sure to be a daunting role for the Oscar nominated actor (which I have no doubt he’ll be able to pull off). His commitment is there (since he’s been on the project since 2010). Plus having one of the greatest filmmakers of all time brought on to helm the film has already turned this into an Oscar conversation.
And if all of that wasn’t enough to get you excited, the screenplay will be written by the screenwriter of “Captain Phillips“, BIlly Ray. He also recently wrote the screenplays for the original “Hunger Games” and the critically acclaim political thriller “State of play“.
No word on the release date as of yet. DiCaprio can be seen in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s upcoming film “The Reverent” and Martin Scorsese has another project starring Andrew Garfield set to be released sometime next year. Hopefully after “The Devil in White City” he can finally get around to that “Sinatra” biopic he has been trying to get off the ground for years now.
