In a big press release Disney has named the new directors for their upcoming “Star Wars” anthology film set to be released on May 25th,2018…..Phil Lord and Chris Millar. Yes, the “21 and 22 Jump Street” directors are coming over to the Star Wars Universe, to make a film revolving around a young Han Solo.
Millar and Lord said in the press release, “This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.” The film will be written by Lawrence Kasdan and even his son Jon Kasdan.
Phil Lord and Chris Millar have been a growing force in the Hollywood machine for the past few years and with good reason, they are proven talents. “Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs”, “21 and 22 Jump Street” and “The Lego Movie” are all critical favorites. They even are working on the story for DC’s upcoming film, “The Flash” (which some reports are suggesting he will be departing), an animated Spider-Man project for Sony and another “Jump Street” film, “23 Jump Street”. These two coming over to direct this feature excites me greatly. It’s also worth noting this is not the same project that Josh Trank was working on and just departed a few months ago. Which we can only assume means (that if the rumors are true) then that film will focus on Boba Fett and be released not till around 2019.
As regards to the news that this film will focus on Han Solo, my reaction is very much underwhelmed. While I am thrilled that Phil Lord and Chris Millar are coming on as directors I am not that interested in solo “Star Wars” character (origin) films. “Star Wars” works best when it’s an ensemble and even though the 6 part saga (as it stands now) is the overarching story of the Skywalker family, it’s not just “the Luke Skywalker show” or “the Anakin Skywalker show”, there a great many characters and stories around them. Solo films revolving around one character feel very contained and small. It’s a type story that is probably better suited for books or video games (of which are official cannon). As awesome as Han Solo is I’m not sure his character alone can carry a film (that’s coming from a big “Star Wars” fan as well). I have the same apprehensions about a Boba Fett movie. Then again a smaller more focused story might feel refreshing in the “Star Wars” films. There is some potential within a story like this.
For now I’ll give Disney and Lucasfilm the benefit of the doubt considering the talent they have aboard. Of the “Star Wars” Anthology films I am most excited about “Rouge One” but as a loyal “Star Wars” fan I’ll reserve my judgment on this current project until I see some more. (cue Chris Pratt rumors as Han Solo in 3….2…1).
