So once again another photo of a DC super villain has taken the internet by storm. First the Lex Luthor picture got everyone talking and debating then possibly the most well known villain in all of comic books (and my personal favorite) has been revealed with this first picture of Jared Leto as the Joker. As with all comic book movie news announcements, the internet is split on how to look at it. Some love the new look while others hate it. Seeing that the Joker is one of my favorite characters of all time, I knew I had to weigh my own opinion on this, and that opinion is…I love it!!!
Look, it’s important to keep in mind this is just one picture. We have to see the character in context of the film to see if it will work or not, but I can’t wait to see what this looks like on the big screen. Leto looks absolutely psychotic as the Joker. Let’s not even look at the entire photo for a second, just look in the man’s face. The eyes glisten with absolute madness. This isn’t just a picture of an actor in the costume of the character, Leto is completely 100% in character and he looks stunning. The madness is just so instilled in the frozen picture of his silent laugh. It’s absolutely terrifying (you try waking up in the middle of the night to seeing that in your room). It’s just a picture, but it sort of gives me a gauge for where Leto will take the character. And, it looks like the filmmakers and Leto are steering away from Heath Ledger’s Joker.
As amazing of a performance Ledger’s Joker was, if this has any hope of succeeding they need a new take on the character. Anyone trying their best to pull off a Ledger impression will just be that…an impression and no one will care about it.
The rest of the look, I actually like. Leto has the green hair, pale skin, and many other little nods to staples of the character. The tattoos don’t bother me because he has had tattoos in the comic books before and they fit his character. It’s not like he has a tattoo of a heart with the word “mom” written in the middle. I do think the damaged tattoo is a bit too much, but it doesn’t ruin the look for me personally (although I’ve also heard that the tattoos might not be apart of the final product).
When I look to the comic book versions (to what might have inspired this), it looks like a weird amalgamation of different Joker looks to create something we never have seen before. The pale skin looks very much inspired by Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns” (which seems to be the basis for a few of DC’s upcoming movies), while the pose of the Joker looks like “The Killing Joke” Joker written by Alan Moore and drawn by Brain Bolland. The comics I first thought of when I saw it is actually not something most would immediately would think of. That was the Tony S. Daniel Joker during the “Batman R.I.P.” storyline written by Grant Morrison (mostly in particular issue number 680). The skinny yet still muscular psychotic look reminded me of that Joker. Regardless, like most comic book adaptations of the character, Leto will put his own stamp on the character and this photo gets me so pumped to see him in action. What does everyone else think?
