Thoughts on Batman/Superman Movie Coming out in 2015

Okay I know it’s been a while since the news has been announced, but my personal life has been so busy that I really haven’t had time to sit down and comment on it. However this news is so big that this is definitely still worth talking about. Warner Bros. has announced that their next big entry/follow up to the very successful “Man of Steel” (2013), and it is a Batman/Superman movie. If you’re a comic book fan, movie fan, or a person who loves breathing, you cannot be at the very least interested to see how this turns out. These are the two arguably biggest superheroes ever. This was such an unexpected move by Warner Bros. to make this movie next, and single handedly stole the spotlight from anything else at comic con. Yes there were some other big announcements but no one can deny that this is what everyone was talking about after the convention. Most of you know what happened by now, to announce it they had Henry Lennox come out and read this passage from the graphic novel “The Dark Knight Returns,”

“I want you to remember, Clark, in all the years to come, in your most private moments; I want you to remember my hand at your throat. I want you to remember the one man who beat you.”
(Batman, The Dark Knight Returns”)

Of course for those of that don’t know, that passage is at the end of the Batman and Superman fight in which Batman defeats Superman. It is one of the most iconic moments in all of comic book history.

Right after Lennix read the passage, a huge Batman/Superman symbol flashed onto the screen, and the entire room went absolutely nuts. It was a moment no one saw coming and it was something we all wanted to see but didn’t think it would happen. So what does this mean for the next film for DC Cinematic Universe? Here are my thoughts on the new Superman/Batman film.

(Spoilers will be involved)

How does Batman work into this film?

There are a lot of possibilities that could work Batman into this film. Batman coming to investigate Kal-El? One thing we can rule out is Superman going to Gotham investigating, this new mysterious Batman. Warner Bros has announced that this will be a seasoned Batman, someone in their early 40s, so Batman has been around for a while in this universe. What is more likely to happen is Bruce Wayne comes to Metropolis to meet with businessman Lex Luthor, in an effort to help rebuild the city after General Zod, flattened a good size portion of it. Meanwhile he also has another motive for being there. It could be that Batman suspects foul play with Luthor or one of Batman’s foes comes to Metropolis. Regardless one thing that is we do know is Batman and Kal-El will not be friends at first. It’s probably safe to assume that they will end up having a confrontation in the film, perhaps more than once. I doubt that he will be the antagonist; nor will we be a quote on quote “good guy” however I don’t believe he will be “the villain”. More than likely the two superheroes will have to overcome their differences to defeat the real threat. That seems like the most logical way to script the story; however I am merely speculating that, I have nothing to base that of off.
Right now the title for the film seems to be “Batman vs. Superman”. Most of us would prefer something different. That title is pretty weak; remember these titles, “Freddy vs. Jason”, “Godzilla vs. (inset monster)”, “Cowboys and Aliens”? A more reasonable title would be “World’s Finest” however that being said from the earlier announcement it seems that this film be more of a “Man of Steel Movie” with Batman, rather it being equal. John Campea of AMC Movie Talk suggested this name, “Man of Steel: World’s Finest”. This is the desired title because it shows that this is still Superman’s film but also includes Batman. In hindsight, I’m not sure it matters since when the film actually comes out, everyone will be calling it, “The Batman/Superman” movie. In reality the title doesn’t matter too much.
The Title?

Who Will Play Batman?

If any of you read my “7 Ways to Reboot Batman” article you will know I am a big supporter of Karl Urban getting the role and since Urban is in that age range my choice has remained unchanged. This takes out the possibility of Armie Hammer in the role, which would be in my top 5 to play the role, but due to recent reports it seems as though he is officially out of the running, claiming he’s not interested. Rumors are now circulating that Josh Brolin is front runner for the role. He would no doubt play an excellent Bruce Wayne but I just can’t see him as Batman, I’m not sure if he is the best fit for the role.

Let’s get the elephant in the room taken care of; this is not connected to “The Dark Knight Trilogy”! Christian Bale is not coming back! Joseph Gordon -Levitt is not becoming Batman! That series is done, it was self contained universe. “The Dark Knight Rises” was the finale, the crescendo, the end of the story, that has nothing more to do with this universe with “Man of Steel” then “The Amazing Spider-Man” has to do with “The Avengers” universe, neither one of them are getting together. Furthermore why would you want Bale’s Batman back? Don’t get me wrong he is my favorite Batman and one of my favorite trilogies but that Batman was put in an ultra realistic world. That Batman would not be able to survive half the things the one in the comic book does, in “Man of Steel” it took that comic book character with his powers in tact (with added force) and dropped him into our world. Bale’s Batman lost in a fight and almost died against Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises”. Bane was stronger than the average guy with much more endurance, if “Man of Steel” Superman fought “Dark Knight Rises” Bane, Bane would be killed with one punch. Bale’s Batman couldn’t fight Henry Cavil’s Superman. This film needs a Batman closer to the comics in order to go toe to toe with this current Superman, and yet still drop him in our world…not an easy thing to do.

The state of the DC Universe

I do have some conflicting doubts if it’s ready for a Batman/Superman movie; however I am confident that Warner Bros. knows what they want this time around, unlike “Green Lantern” (2011). I do hope that they keep the story focused of their characters in the next film and develop them nicely, if they can do that then that installs a lot more confidence in where they are taking these films, and if they pull of this film, it will be a huge feat. A lot of challenges are ahead of the filmmakers with this movie.

What concerns me that they aren’t launching any of their other hero’s into solo films. They don’t need to copy Marvel and get a film for all of them but they should make at least two others, “Wonder Woman” film and a “Flash” film. They don’t have to make a “Green Lantern” movie they can bring him into “Justice League” in a similar way that the graphic novel , “Justice League: The New Frontier” did, which had an animated movie adaptation as well. If they want a 6th member whether it be Martian the Manhunter, Cyborg, or Aquaman they all be introduced with “Justice League” along with Green Lantern. However trying to introduce 4 other big characters in one film, might be challenging, especially if DC fans want their “Avengers” film where it was pure fun and they didn’t have to worry about adding another big superhero to the list. I don’t get the impression that they do, but that could be a concern. That being said, “Lord of the Rings” and “Watchmen” pulled all that off and were great films, so can “Justice League”. I just fear that there could be a rushed job here, which can be understandable after “Green Lantern” that we all want to forget.

Remember getting teased?

For now we can all look to the future optimistically with finally getting a Batman/Superman movie, which we all have been waiting for and finally getting. This will easily make it into the top 3 box office films of 2015. Crossing my fingers hard, if they pull this off, it will be amazing.
